10 Brain Foods To Keep Your Children Alert While Studying

For most children of this era, eating isn’t just about satisfying hunger. It is also about supplementing children’s health and development and helping them perform their best academically. As mothers, we are constantly thinking of ways to provide our kids with a complete diet rich in iron, calcium, multivitamins and all other nutrients.

1. Peanut

Peanuts are rich in lecithin and cephalin, which are crucial substances for the nervous system. It is proven that regular consumption of peanuts can improve blood circulation and enhance memory. Being rich in Vitamins A, Vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, fiber, and protein, peanuts are very helpful toward children’s physical and brain development.

2. Spinach

Spinach is a super-food beneficial to our skin, bone and hair health. It contains twice as much iron as most other green vegetables. Spinach also contains lots of chlorophyll, which is closely related to memory, concentration, and mental function.

3. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate and cocoa contain compounds that promote brain development, including flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants. These compounds may enhance our memory function and help slow down age-related mental decline. A study of more than 900 people also found that those who regularly ate chocolates performed better on a series of mental tasks – some involving memory work, compared to those who rarely ate them.

4. Coconut oil

Coconut oil is another excellent brain food, containing a high concentration of MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) – a special kind of saturated fat that can be easily absorbed and used by the brain for energy. Besides improving brain functionality, coconut oil also helps in protecting the brain and reducing the risk of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s and epilepsy.

5. Milk

The nutritional profile of milk is impressive. It’s an excellent source of protein which is necessary for many vital functions in the body, including the brain. Studies found that milk actually contains all nine essential amino acids necessary for the human body to function at an optimal level! Being rich in calcium – an indispensable substance for brain metabolism, milk can be considered as the perfect brain food for children.

6. Egg

Egg yolk is rich in acetylcholine, which protects the brain and is great for improving memory. Eggs can also increase adrenaline, which helps the brain to stay awake and improve alertness. Getting children to consume one or two eggs per day can help keep them alert while studying.

7. Chicken

Chicken is rich in tyrosine, an amino acid necessary for the body to produce dopamine, adrenaline, and norepinephrine. When the brain produces these substances, children can think and react faster as they become more focused and energetic. In other words, the body uses tyrosine to create chemical messengers that affect brain conditions, such as improve learning, memory, and alertness, especially during stressful situations.

8. Fish

Fish has high nutritional value and is considered one of the best brain foods. Getting kids to eat some fish on a regular basis can boost their brain development while providing the body with the nutrients it needs. However, we should avoid fish fried at high temperatures or smoked fish that are exposed to the sun for a long time, because these foods contain lipid peroxide, which can damage parts of our metabolic systems and brain cells.

9. Orange

Oranges may possibly be one of the keys to helping our children staying mentally sharp while studying. Oranges contain large amounts of Vitamins A, B1, C and other antioxidants that can help the brain cells resist damage and keep a clear mind. Lemons, citrus, and grapefruit have similar effects and can replace oranges. Small and easily administered changes to our children’s daily diet, like getting children to eat more of those fruits, can have the potential to greatly benefit their brain health.

 10. Chili Pepper

For families who love chili peppers, you’ll be glad to hear that it’s good for you. Studies found that the brain is filled with receptors for capsaicin, the compound in chili peppers which gives them their heat. When we eat chili peppers, the capsaicin can increase appetite, promote brain blood flow and improved alertness. And surprisingly, people who consume spicy foods also report a mood-lifting effect similar to what runners feel after working out! Therefore, moderate chili pepper intake can also be good for our children.
