Visit, Explore and Learn

Looking for a meaningful yet educational weekend activity with your child? Make a visit to the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) where it hosts deep research and education in SouthEast Asian biodiversity. It is an excellent place for children to learn and explore about biodiversity, needs of sustainable development and conservation. The LKCNHM holds over 2,000 natural history specimens on display that allow visitors to experience the amazing stories of nature in Southeast Asia.

Under the Biodiversity Gallery, the museum has displays of dinosaurs fossils, Singapore Sperm Whale, Slice of the Changi Tree and Neptune’s Cup Sponge. At the Heritage Gallery, visitors can delve into the nostalgic past of the museum’s history where the natural history collection goes way back into the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was once part of the former Raffles Library and Museum (now National Museum of Singapore). The gallery holds the Leatherback Turtle species, Sunda Pangolin, mangrove swamps and dryland forest as well as Phylogenetic Garden.

LKCNHM offers a range of curriculum-based educational workshops and other programmes in the area of natural history and ecology. These activities seek to arouse curiosity and educate students of the rich natural history and heritage in Singapore; facilitate a better appreciation and understanding of conservation in Singapore; foster experiential-learning and creative thinking in students; and provide students with opportunities to carry out research projects and interact with scientists.

The museum also offers workshops for children of different ages ranging from animal classification, documenting nature, Singapore biodiversity and adaptation, evolution and marine ecology. Field camps are also other workshops that the museum organizes. For kids looking to get close to nature, they will be pleased to know that the museum offers nature walks to different places in Singapore, including Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, MacRitchie Rainforest Nature Walk, Pulau Ubin Nature Walk and Intertidal Walks.

To better introduce visitors to the vast array of specimens showcased in the biodiversity and heritage galleries of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, complimentary gallery tours are available for one hour.
